I Feel Like I Don't Have Purpose In My Work Or Life

We’re launching a new series, answering some of the most commonly asked questions from career shifters we work with or that are part of our FREE Career Shifters Community.  

The question we’re going to address today is all around the big word, PURPOSE and finding our purpose.

 

Everything I read makes me feel like I need to find my purpose in order to be happy in life and work.  I’m worried I don’t have a purpose or might never find my purpose. What suggestions do you have around finding my purpose?

 

Let us start by saying that you are not alone! There are millions if not potentially billions of people that are out there in the world in the exact same position you are in.  

Finding your purpose isn’t something that’s going to magically happen. It’s a life-long developmental process.

Key word is PROCESS.  

Many think that there is an exact system or step-by-step plan on how to find your purpose but the thing is, what gives you purpose or meaning in life is a result of all your experiences, your stories.  

Most often it’s the small things that we tend to overlook because we’re looking for some big magical answer out there in the world, rather than looking inwards.

And guess what, some people have multiple purposes over their life and that’s ok!  

The word purpose is really about finding meaning in life or work.  It doesn’t have to be some big achievement in the same vein as Oprah or Mother Theresa.  We can all uncover what gives us meaning or purpose in life and work but it takes time.

To get started on the process it’s best to start understanding what moves you, what drives you, what interests you. All of those things might change at different stages of your life too and again that’s ok!

Before moving on we want to just mention that some people may find their meaning by experimenting and trialing different things until you find the right thing.  For others it might not work that way and it’s more about the stories that make you who you are.

Meaning is extremely individual and there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ way of how to find what gives you meaning or that sense of purpose.

Here’s a few tips that can help you on your way….
 

  1. Reflect on your life/work experiences.  Think about moments in your life that you enjoyed or that gave you joy.  When were they, what was the environment around you, who was with you, what activities were you doing.  

  2. Start journaling.  Make time daily or weekly to start writing down anything that has happened to you and how you feel.  

  3. Make time for reflection a constant.  As you get in the habit of journaling, start making consistent time outs for reflection, reviewing your journal notes and trying to make sense of it all.  Do you start seeing a pattern of makes you happy, feel moved, motivated, inspired. Over time you’ll start seeing a collection of all the experiences and might trigger what gives you purpose or meaning.

  4. Don’t expect to find your purpose only in your career.  Purpose can manifest in different ways in our life so don’t limit your possibilities of where it might come up in other areas of your life.

  5. Build more connection with your ‘self’.  The more you can cultivate time to sit quietly and just be with yourself, the more likely you will start to uncover what resonates most with you, what moves you, what purpose for you might be.
